Thomas Pendergast is a Melbourne based artist working across a range of media including painting, video and sculpture. His latest exhibition of paintings – Super Enamel, at the Owl and the Pussycat Gallery, is a personal exploration of figure and portraits.
Pendergast has experimented with atmosphere, industrial/residential environments, and the physical presence of the paintings themselves. He says that he has “scrutinised the tradition of portrait painting” which has inevitably lead him to question the nature of man, the relevance of portraiture and the figure as a communicative device in painting.
Pendergast is a recent graduate of the Australian Academy of design. Earlier this year he was awarded a Rainbow Serpent Festival Arts Grant, to design and build a large-scale sculpture to be incorporated into the festival environment, which was extremely well received.
The exhibition is Pendergast’s first solo show and will open on Tuesday 16th August.
Super Enamel continues The Owl and Pussycat’s proud record of supporting talented and emerging artists.
