An interest in sub culture and the notion of the “Ball” scene has inspired James McCullough’s debut solo exhibition at the Owl and the Pussycat Gallery, “Pepper Labeija”.
“Ball” was an underground sub-culture created by the transsexual and gay community of New York in the 1970’s and 80’s. The scene brought together African Americans, Latino’s and transgender men under one roof in competition with each other, and in so doing finding solidarity with one another.
Often in drag, the contestant’s were judged on their dance skills, costumes and attitude. They competed for fame. They competed for unity. They competed for freedom.
In this series McCullough was inspired to document these men’s lives through a series of paintings on board and canvas, capturing the beauty and power of these men. Portraying their wild costumes, flamboyant makeup and eclectic styles.
James McCullough is a passionate and dedicated emerging artist from Melbourne. McCullough works with confident gestural marks deriving from growing up in a graffiti sub culture.
