“Everything Is Dead While It Lives” is an infamous quote from the Austrian painter Egon Schiele. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. The idea that ʻeverything is dead while it livesʼ is an existentially bizarre statement that brings into question the very aspect of what ʻdeadʼ and ʻlivingʼ means in terms of existence.
Eight Melbourne based and local artists have been gathered together by first-time curator, exhibitor and emerging visual artist Michael Laws, to create work in response to this quote and to reinterpret, represent or argue against this ambiguous philosophy.
With a diverse range of works from emerging artists working in a number of varying mediums, the show comprises pieces by artists from an assorted range of backgrounds and influences, the exhibition covers a large range of philosophies and attitudes in a number of varying aesthetic ways.
