“Feelings and thoughts so accurately transform into faces.” –Misha Grace.
Amygdala is the small, kidney shaped region of the brain that plays a key role in the control and processing of fear, rage and pleasure, in animals and humans.
This Body of workbrings together paintings and drawings created in the last 5 months using similar techniques and materials, however, and most significantly, with an intent to adopt a less controlled manner compared to Misha’s previous work.
Instead of entering the process of creating an image with a clear expectation or goal, Misha relied more on intuition.
“I have found that the inner turbulence, and less often, silence, in my mind has given rise to direct expressions of mental states, allowing intensities of rhythm during my thoughts to dictate the application of paint.”
In this series of work, as in life, this energy is embodied in the human form, the faces symbolizing the nature of each thought and forming different characters, describing the particular state of mind.
“Picking out little 'events' that may have occurred in one area of paint, trying to account for and then remember which physical motion produced it, and if I can, what sort of emotion informed my decision to do it. Even when it has led me to unpleasing works, I've been satisfied when I'm able to step back and treat these portraits as fruitful errors.” |
